Sustainable research at the UTN: expansion and restructuring of the departments

The University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN), founded in 2021, is a living laboratory for a public university of the next generation in the age of AI. Its founding concept included a central School of Young Students and Researchers offering interdisciplinary programs and a commitment to interdisciplinary research that addresses important problems of our society and economy. The UTN started with two seed departments and is now advancing the planning of three new departments.

The Founding Steering Board of the UTN has therefore approved the development of these new departments:

  • “Department of Biological Engineering”
  • “Department of Mechatronic Engineering”
  • “Department of Natural Sciences”

The Board approved further the renaming of the existing seed departments “Engineering”, led by Prof. Wolfram Burgard and “Liberal Arts & Sciences”, led by Prof. Gyburg Uhlmann, to “Department of Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence” and “Department of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences” respectively.

The three new departments will be established and developed in subsequent years. All five departments will provide study, research and transfer opportunities that address critical challenges in their respective fields and promote collaboration among students, faculty and UTN stakeholders across departments and disciplines.

Bavaria’s Minister of Science Markus Blume emphasizes: “Our new founding president Prof. Dr. Michael Huth is getting to work: The restructuring of the departments is innovative, takes up the founding steering board’s concept in full and develops it cleverly and with a clear AI focus. A completely new scientific spirit is currently emerging in Nuremberg. The UTN is young, cool and courageous: as a start-up university, it is developing new structures that enable visionary ideas for teaching and research of the future.”

Founding President, Prof Michael Huth, says: “This decision about the Department genesis of the UTN resulted from intense and collegiate discussions and strategic planning at the UTN.  We are grateful that the Founding Steering Board approved this Department genesis. These five Departments will reflect the AI-focus of the UTN, empower the UTN to stay cutting-edge and agile, and foster interdisciplinarity in its collaborations across education, research, and transfer.”
