Siemens Fürth: A Global Beacon of Sustainability

The World Economic Forum (WEF) has recognized Siemens' Fürth site as a Sustainability Lighthouse. This factory is the 21st globally to receive this title. The WEF honors organizations that contribute to reducing energy consumption, emissions, water, and waste through technological innovations. Cedrik Neike from Siemens highlighted that the intelligent energy system in Fürth has reduced energy consumption by 64% and greenhouse gas emissions by 72%, while increasing production by 145%.

Founded in 1954, the Fürth site employs 1,700 people and produces Human-Machine Interface (HMI) panels, among other products. The goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2026. A cross-departmental sustainability team has been working since 2012 to reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. Industrial waste was reduced by 47% between 2019 and 2023.

An innovative energy system, consisting of several Siemens products, enables precise calculation of the CO₂ footprint and suggests improvements. A filter system to improve grid quality led to a 3.8% reduction in electricity consumption. A circular economy extends the lifespan of products and reduces waste.

Additional measures include a photovoltaic system and in-house nitrogen production. Siemens has reduced its CO₂e emissions by 60% since 2019 and supports customers in achieving their sustainability goals.
