Ohm opens modular building for health sciences on the UTN campus
On April 3, 2025, the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm (Ohm) opened a modular building on the grounds of the University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN) together with Science Minister Markus Blume. The building will be used by the Nuremberg School of Health to house the health sciences.
The new modular building in Dr.-Luise-Herzberg-Straße is located on the UTN campus in Nuremberg-Lichtenreuth. The space of around 1,000 square meters is used by the Ohm's Faculty of Health Sciences, the Nuremberg School of Health (SoH). The SoH was created in 2021 from a cooperation between the university and Nuremberg Hospital. It will be the 13th faculty at the Ohm and will focus on high-tech integration, IT interfaces, management and data competence in healthcare and midwifery science.
“The opening of the new modular building marks a significant step for our university and the Nuremberg School of Health,” said Ohm President Prof. Dr. Niels Oberbeck. "We are creating optimal conditions here for the training of future healthcare professionals. The building meets the latest structural requirements and integrates contemporary working concepts, creating ideal conditions for our staff and students. We are also delighted about the excellent cooperation with the University of Technology Nuremberg - it underlines our close partnership and can serve as a model for institutional cooperation."
The modular building offers space for seminars, teaching and administration on three floors. There are three seminar rooms and a large foyer with seating for students on the first floor. The second floor comprises further seminar rooms, an IT laboratory and a room for practical lessons. Green hydroponic elements and seating areas create a pleasant atmosphere. The administration is housed on the second floor, supplemented by shared desk workstations, co-working offices, a meeting room and two UTN offices.
The 15 SoH professors and staff have already moved into their new workspaces, and teaching for the current 200-plus students will begin in the summer semester of 2025. The practice-oriented courses offered by SoH include the Bachelor's degree courses in Midwifery Science and Digital Health Management, while the Master's degree course in Digital Health Analytics will begin in the coming winter semester. The courses place a particular focus on the close integration of theory and practice, the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare and interprofessional training in healthcare.
The total costs for the construction of the modular building amount to around 9 million euros, most of which was spent from the Hightech Agenda Bayern modular building program (around 7 million euros). It is therefore part of the Bavarian state government's 5.5 billion euro innovation offensive to increase study place capacities, strengthen the healthcare sector and promote regional university development.
