"METAVERSE: Phenomenally digital?"
The new exhibition on the subject of Metaverse opens at the "Deutsches Museum Nürnberg" - the Future Museum - on 9 February.
The Metaverse is the future of the internet: a borderless, immersive, interactive, digital world that exists alongside the real world. The vision promises a life in the digital that corresponds to the real: we go wherever we want without constantly logging in and out. We use things by lifting or throwing them, not by clicking on them. And we talk to people, meet and touch them.
This vision of a digital parallel world is not new, but comes from the 1992 science fiction novel "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson, which sheds light on the possible social consequences of the metaverse.
This is precisely where the exhibition comes in. It shows social, economic and legal phenomena as we already find them today in "prototypical metaverses" such as Decentraland, Second Life or VR Chat and highlights the positive and negative developments. It invites reflection and discussion - in order to shape the metaverse together.
The exhibition METAVERSE: Phenomenal Digital? is open from 9 February until 22 September 2024 and is located on the 3rd floor of the Future Museum.
