AI-Hotspot Nuremberg

As part of the AI offensive, Nuremberg's capabilities in the field of artificial intelligence will be further strengthened.

On 6 February 2024, the state of Bavaria's AI offensive was announced at a cabinet meeting.

Marcus König, Lord Mayor of the City of Nuremberg, welcomes this announcement: "Artificial intelligence is the key technology for the economy. The fact that Nuremberg is now being developed into a hotspot for artificial intelligence with the state government's decisions is an important step in setting the course for competitiveness and economic strength at the location."

Under the leadership of the Technical University of Nuremberg (UTN), an open source AI base model is being created for the Free State of Bavaria. In parallel, the UTN is being developed into Germany's first AI university. When completed, 250 professors will research and teach there.

A further 100 AI professorships are also to be created in the Free State of Bavaria. Local universities will certainly benefit from this as well. Furthermore, the Free State of Bavaria is investing in the computer infrastructure that is essential for the development and training of artificial intelligence. To strengthen the transfer of knowledge and technology in Bavarian SMEs and the skilled trades, new AI regional centres are being set up at the Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences in Nuremberg and four other Bavarian universities of applied sciences. AI regional centres receive funding for the development of scientific expertise and infrastructure for applied research with companies. In addition, the KI-Transfer+ programme of the Free State of Bavaria to promote the use of artificial intelligence in SMEs will be extended to a further 100 Bavarian companies.

The city of Nuremberg and the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region are very well positioned in the field of artificial intelligence. Over 200 professorships are already active in the field of artificial intelligence in and around Nuremberg. A further 250 AI experts are conducting research at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS. Specific contact points for artificial intelligence in Nuremberg include the ADA Lovelace Centre for Analytics, Data and Applications for Companies and the Zollhof Tech Incubator for start-ups.
